440C — HRC 57–59 — From $89
The most rust-resistant steel we work in, and the easiest to keep sharp — for students, home grooming and wet coats.
Our Steel
A shear is only as good as the steel underneath the polish. We work in three Japanese grades — 440C, VG-10 and ATS-314 — and finish every pair in our own workshop. Below is which one is yours.
Know your blade
We work in the same three grades the most respected Western brands specify — and we tell you exactly which one is in which pair. No mystery steel, no vague "premium alloy" copy.
The most rust-resistant steel we work in, and the easiest to keep sharp — for students, home grooming and wet coats.
Cobalt-alloyed, with a smoother cut and a tougher edge — for groomers who stand at the bench all day.
Our least-pull steel and the longest edge life in the range — for a high-volume bench on dense coats.
Anatomy
A shear is only as good as its edge geometry. Ours are hollow-ground to a convex profile, then honed and stropped by hand — the slow way, because it is the only way to get a blade that slices instead of pushes.
| Blade geometry | Convex (hamaguri) — slices cleanly, resists folding |
|---|---|
| Edge angle | Approx. 55° inclusive, hand-finished |
| Pivot | Adjustable tension screw, ball-bearing option |
| Handle | Offset / crane / swivel — fitted to hand size |
| Finish | Mirror polish or satin, your choice at checkout |
Provenance
"Japanese steel" gets printed on a lot of blades that never saw a Japanese mill. So every fusheart shear ships with its documentation in the box. Check the numbers before you trust the edge.
